Mecca, also known as Makkah, is located around 45 miles inland from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. The city is the capital of Makkah province and is regarded as the most holy city in the religion of Islam.
The city of Mecca has a population of approximately 2 million and is located in the Sirat Mountains at an elevation of 909 feet above sea level. Mecca is the birthplace of the prophet Muhammad and the religion of Islam. Every year, millions of Muslims make a pilgrimage to Mecca. All Muslims who are able to must perform this pilgrimage, known as the Hajj, at least once during their lifetime.
