National Geographic provides numerous interactive maps and atlases for kids on its website. Sheppard Software also provides map games for kids that teach about continents, countries, lakes, rivers and other geographical details.
National Geographic's MapMachine allows children to create their own maps, adding information and statistical layers such as tectonic plate locations, population density and natural disasters. The Online Conservation Atlas details Earth's eco-regions and includes plant and animal profiles, and detailed photographs.
Many of Sheppard Software's game involve identifying capital cities, memorizing countries on each continent and learning about different landscapes. In the Level 4 "Cartographer" game in the Africa tab, the player is given a map of Africa and must enter the first three letters of each country's capital on the map.
