Full Answer

Before Juan Ponce de Leon visited this southern peninsula in the 1500s and dubbed it "La Florida," meaning "flowery land", various Native American tribes, including the Apalachee, Timicua and Ais, called the land home. One of the first European settlements existed in what is now Pensacola, but this was abandoned by 1561.

Finally, after some conflict with Native Americans, Florida became the 27th state on March 3rd, 1845. In the 1920s, Florida experienced increased tourism due to its sunny climate and hotel and resort developments, not to mention the advent of air conditioning.

By 2010, Florida's population had swelled to more than 18 million, making Florida the most populous state in the southeastern United States and the fourth most populous state overall. While some states, such as Alaska, might only have one or two zip codes per county, Florida's counties, which are more numerous in the first place, can have zip codes numbering into the hundreds.
