How Many States Does Mexico Have?
The country of Mexico comprises 31 states and the Federal District of Mexico City, its largest city and capital. The states stretch from the U.S. border in the north to the southern and eastern borders shared with Guatemala and Belize.
Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas share borders with the United States. Quintana Roo, Campeche, Tabasco and Chiapas are the states that border Guatemala and Belize. Chihuahua, Sonora and Coahuila are the largest Mexican states in land area. The Gulf of Mexico lies to the east of the country, while the Gulf of California and Pacific Ocean rest along the western coastline.
