As of 2014, there are 219 official and de facto capital cities in 195 countries. Twelve countries have more than one capital city. The island country of Nauru has no official capital city; instead the government offices are located in the Yaren District.
The 12 countries with more than one capital are Benin, Bolivia, Cote d'Ivoire, Israel, Malaysia, Myanmar, Netherlands, Nigeria, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Swaziland and Tanzania. In some countries, the capital was moved to another city, but several government offices remained in the original capital. One example is the move of Cote d'Ivoire's capital from Abidjan to Yamoussoukro. In other countries, the seats of government are divided among several cities. For example, in South Africa Cape Town is legislative capital, Bloemfontein is the judicial capital and Pretoria is the administrative capital.
