How Many Islands Make up the Florida Keys?

Approximately 1,700 islands make up the Florida Keys. This archipelago extends over 198 square miles from the Soldier Keys to the Dry Tortugas.

The Florida Keys begin in Biscayne Bay and stretch southwest before ending at Dry Tortuga. There are 42 bridges that connect these different keys. The two largest islands are Key Largo with an area of 40 square kilometers and Big Pine Key with a size of 17 square kilometers.

Other well-known islands found in the Florida Keys are Islamorada, Marathon and Key West. The southern tip of Key West is about 90 miles from Cuba. The Florida Keys have many parks and sanctuaries, such as the Florida Keys Marine Sanctuary.
