As of 2013, there are 254 counties in Texas. The largest Texan city, Houston, is located in Harris County, while the second largest city, San Antonio, is located in Bexar County. The city of Dallas is in Dallas County.
When Texas first became a state in 1836, it had 23 counties. Some of the later counties added to the state include Loving County in 1931, Kenedy County in 1921, Hudspeth County in 1917 and Real County in 1913. The smallest county by area is Rockwall County with 129 square miles, while the largest counties are Brewster County at 6,193 square miles and Pecos County at 4,764 square miles.
