According to a BBC report, there are 13,350 centenarians in the United Kingdom in 2012. This figure reflects a 73 percent increase in the number of centenarians from 2002-2012. More than 600 of these centenarians are over 105 years old.
TheCentenarian reports several common characteristics of centenarians. These include having a natural ability to cope with stress, living in non-industrial environments, participating actively in religion, having children later in life or after 40, and having close relatives who also lived long lives. Most centenarians also never smoked or abused alcohol.
Czech Republic, Spain, France, Canada and Italy are countries with large populations of people who are over 100 years old.
