How Many African Countries Are There?


As of 2014, Africa has 54 countries. The largest country by area is Algeria, while the most populous country is Nigeria. African countries can be divided by location into the following regions: Northern Africa, the Horn of Africa, Eastern Africa, Central Africa, Southern Africa and Western Africa.

The smallest country in Africa by area is The Seychelles, which is also the least populated country. The highest elevation on the continent is found in Tanzania, while the lowest elevation is at Lake Assal in Djibouti. The Nile River system runs through many African countries, including Egypt and Sudan. The Saharan desert covers numerous countries in North Africa, such as Libya and Egypt, and is the hottest desert in the world.
