Coal has traditionally been West Virginia's leading industry, but chemical manufacturing and biotech also make up a significant portion of the state's economy, as of 2015. The aerospace and automotive industries are also significant contributors.
West Virginia has a long history of coal production and still exports more interstate electricity than any other state, but the coal industry is prone to fluctuations due to environmental concerns. About 140 different companies manufacture chemicals in the state, and a number of leading biotech companies are also headquartered there. Production of metals for the aerospace industry is also a major part of the state's economy.
