Full Answer

The Pacific Crest Trail's original purpose was to link the John Muir Trail, the Tahoe-Yosemite Trail, the Skyline Trail and the Cascade Crest Trail. Clinton C. Clarke, along with groups from the YMCA, planned the route between 1935 and 1938. The trail became an official National Scenic Trail in 1968. The trail gained notoriety in 2012 when Cheryl Strayed's memoir, "Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail" reached the top of the New York Times Best Sellers List. Popularity grew even further after Strayed's memoir later became a 2014 movie called "Wild," starring Reese Witherspoon.
