Backed by John D. Rockefeller, Amoco began in 1889, under the name Standard Oil of Indiana. In 1912, the first Amoco service station opened in Minnesota. In the 1920s, Amoco began securing its own sources of oil, and in the 1930s, the company struck oil in several Texas locations. Amoco grew throughout the 20th century, eventually merging with BP in 1998, forming a new company, BP Amoco. In the early 2000s, all Amoco service stations in the United States were rebranded as BP service stations.Learn more about Geography
