One of the best known parks in California is Yosemite National Park, which is located in east-central California and covers nearly 750,000 acres in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Among the most popular features is El Capitan, an outcropping of granite that soars above the Merced River. Other features of the park include the coniferous forests and the stands of sequoia along with many rivers, lakes and waterfalls.

Death Valley National Park is the largest national park in the contiguous states. It covers over 3 million acres, and though of ominous reputation, it is visited for its sand dunes, petrogylphs and canyons.

Lassen Volcanic National Park is what's left of a volcano that erupted thousands of years ago. Lassen, which was a vent in this older volcano, is still considered active and is the largest plug dome volcano in the world. Because of this volcanic activity, the park is replete with hot springs and other geothermal phenomena. Like Yosemite, Lassen is also in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
