The largest country by area in North America is Canada. By population, Canada is only the third largest, trailing both Mexico and the United States.
North America covers over 24.5 million square kilometers and is surrounded by three of the largest oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic. While there are over 40 countries in North America, most of the land and population belongs to Canada, United States, Mexico and Greenland. The northern countries, Canada and Greenland, contain large amounts of natural resources, but are not as hospitable as the southern countries. Most of the population of Canada is located near the southern border with the U.S.
