Lake Tahoe is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains on the border between California and Nevada. The California and Nevada border is located on the east side of Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe can be reached from major cities such as Sacramento, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.
Routes 80, 395 and 50 provide direct access to Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe is west of Carson City. Two-thirds of the lake's shoreline resides in California. Lake Tahoe is located in Placer, El Dorado, Douglas and Washoe County. Lake Tahoe is the sixth-largest lake in the United States and was formed during the ice ages.
