Chicago is located on the shores of Lake Michigan at the lake's southernmost point. Within the city limits of Chicago, there are 26 miles of shoreline and many marinas holding thousands of boats.
Lake Michigan is the third largest of the Great Lakes, with a water surface of 22,300 miles. When measured by water volume, it is the second largest behind only Lake Superior. Lake Michigan gets its name from the Ojibwa Indian word "mishigami", which means large lake. It is the only Great Lake that is found entirely within the United States, and borders on parts of Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan.
