Kentucky is located in the Mid-South region of the United States. Neighbors include Ohio and Indiana to the north, Illinois to the northeast, Missouri to the west, Tennessee to the south, and Virginia and West Virginia to the east.
Much of the 39,728 square miles of land is dotted with rolling hills, and the Appalachian Mountains stretch across the far eastern region of the state. Major industries of the bluegrass state include tobacco, whiskey production, mining and horse-raising. The state is well-known for its annual Kentucky Derby horse race, held the first weekend in May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, the state's largest city.
