The nation of Israel is located in Asia on the western edge of the Middle East. Israel shares a border with Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt, as well as the Mediterranean Sea, the Gulf of Aqaba and Palestinian territories in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Israel defines itself as a Jewish and Democratic state. It is the only Jewish-majority state in the world. As of 2014, the population in Israel is 8,238,300 with roughly 75 percent of the population being Jewish. The capital of Israel is Jerusalem, which is partly claimed by the Palestinians. Jerusalem is the a holy city of three major religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islam.
