Iraq is a country in the region of the Middle East, located in western Asia. It is bordered by Iran on the east, Turkey by the north, Syria and Jordan by the west, and Saudi Arabia and Kuwait by the south. Iraq has a small coastline along the Persian Gulf.
Iraq is situated in what once was ancient Mesopotamia, a region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Its modern history began in the 1500s when it was controlled by the Ottoman Empire. The area came under the control of the British during World War I and later became an independent constitutional monarchy in 1932.
