The United Kingdom is an island nation in Western Europe containing the countries of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is bordered by the North Sea, the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean. It has an area of 94,060 square miles.

The capital of the United Kingdom is London, which is also the largest city in the country. Other large metropolitan areas include Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Glasgow. The United Kingdom has 14 overseas territories, including the Falkland Islands, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, the Turks and Caicos Islands, Anguilla and Bermuda as well as the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey, located in the English Channel.

As of 2013, the country had a population of 64.1 million people, of whom 87.1 percent were white, 7 percent were Asian, 3 percent were black and 2 percent were of mixed race. Its official language is English although recognized languages spoken in the country include Scots, Irish, Cornish, Welsh, Ulster-Scots and Scottish Gaelic.

The government of the United Kingdom is a parliamentary constitutional monarchy, with a monarch serving as head of state and an elected prime minister serving as the head of government. The country had three major political parties as of 2010, which are the Labour Party, the Conservative Party and the Liberal Democrat Party.
