Two interesting facts about Maryland are that Cecil Calvert founded this colony in 1632 and that Francis Scott Key composed "The Star Spangled Banner" while witnessing a battle in 1814 for the capture of Fort McHenry in Baltimore. Maryland was one of the 13 colonies and joined the union on April 28,1788.
The capital of Maryland, which is Annapolis, is home to the United States Naval Academy. This state is famous for its blue crabs and the state bird the Baltimore oriole.
The USS Constellation, the last surviving warship of the Civil War, is docked in Baltimore. In 1774, the first post office system in the U.S. was established in Baltimore.
