India is a democratic country as of 2015. The preamble of its constitution declares that the country is a democracy, and the electoral process follows democratic lines.
Every five years, the people of India elect representatives to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of Parliament. All adults in the country may vote in these elections. Members of state legislatures and the electoral colleges of Union Territories elect the members of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house. An electoral college consisting of members of the federal legislatures, state legislatures and the Union Territories elects the president of India. The state and local polities use direct and indirect democracy to determine their representation and leadership.
