The city of Houston mandates that airport taxis to and from its airports charge passengers the lesser of either a flat zone rate or the meter rate, as of September 2015. Taxi rides starting from the George Bush Intercontinental Airport have a $2.75 surcharge.
The zone rate system divides Houston into 10 zones, with the 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. night time rates costing a dollar more than daytime rates, which apply from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. The farther the zone is from George Bush airport, the higher the flat rate. The daytime flat rate for Zone 1, which includes North Houston, is $45, and the rate for Zone 2, which covers downtown Houston, is $52.50. The most expensive zone is Zone 8, which goes to the NASA Space Center and charges $104.50.
Trips to and from the smaller Hobby Airport follow a similar flat zone rate system. However, the zones and fee schedule are different, and the rates are generally cheaper. Rides to and from the Hobby Airport add a $1.25 surcharge.
