Is Holland a Country?

Holland is a region in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Though the names "Netherlands" and "Holland" are often used interchangeably by those in the international community and Dutch tourism companies, the official name of the country is the Netherlands. This is the name preferred by most citizens of the Netherlands.

The Netherlands has 12 provinces, two of which make up the region of Holland. The region has been a part of the Netherlands since 1813, and in 1840 it was split into the two provinces of North and South Holland. The largest cities in Holland are Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague.
