Hawaii is an island chain located in the Pacific Ocean nearly 2,100 miles southwest of the United States' mainland. It is not part of North America, although Hawaii is the 50th state of the United States. It became a state in 1959.
Hawaii consists of over 100 islands. However, the eight main islands are Hawaii, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai, Maui, Nihau and Kahoolawe. The area of Hawaii is 10,932 square miles. The archipelago is best known for its famous volcanoes like the Mauna Loa, which is still active.
The capital of Hawaii is Honolulu, which is on the island of Oahu. The population of Hawaii is approximately 1.4 million. The major industries in this state are agriculture and tourism.
