Greece is a country in the southern part of Europe and is bordered by the countries of Albania, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Turkey. Greece's mainland is positioned north of the Mediterranean Sea, and is bordered on the east and west by the Aegean Sea and Ionian Sea, respectively.

Greece has been independent from the Ottoman Empire since 1830. The capital and largest city of Greece is Athens, located in the eastern part of the country. Greece has a total area of about 51,000 square miles, and it is the 97th largest country in the world. This country has a population of nearly 10.8 million people, as of 2014.
