Great Britain is an island situated in the Atlantic Ocean on the northwest section of France, east of Ireland. It is a geopolitical region comprising the autonomous but not independent nations of England, Wales and Scotland.
The first recorded usage of "Great Britain" was during the time of King James I of England, known as James VI of Scotland. In modern parlance, Great Britain is often confused with the United Kingdom. The U.K. is a country composed of Great Britain and Northern Island, which forms the upper portion of the island of Ireland. Great Britain is also different from Britain, with Scotland excluded from the latter.
