Graterford prison is located in Skippack Township, Montgomery County in the state of Pennsylvania. The prison campus is situated east of Graterford on Graterford Road via Pennsylvania Route 29.
Graterford prison was built in 1929 as a modern, more remote replacement for the Eastern Penitentiary in Philadelphia. As of 2015, the prison houses in excess of 3,000 adult male prisoners in a 62 acre maximum security environment. There are a total of 12 housing units including one dedicated to prisoners in need of mental health treatment and one dedicated to capital case inmates. Graterford prison offers a variety of academic and vocational education opportunities as well as many self-help programs.
