The Georgia Apple Festival is a celebration of the apple harvest that takes place over two weekends in October in Ellijay, Georgia, each year. As part of the festivities, vendors offer food, hand-crafted items and craft demonstrations. Visitors from all over attend the festival, sponsored by the cities of Ellijay and East Ellijay, Gilmer County, the Gilmer County Chamber of Commerce and the Ellijay Lions Club.
Events that take place during the Georgia Apple Festival include the Apple Festival Parade, held in historic downtown Ellijay, and the Apple Classic Auto Show, an antique car show that takes place at the Civic Center. Other festival events take place at the Ellijay Lions Club Fairgrounds. Additional events include an apple pie recipe contest and the Ellijay Apple Queen Pageant. The festival accepts applications for vendors of handcrafted and handmade wares to run booths during the event.
The festival celebrates the many varieties of apples available in the region, known as “Georgia’s Apple Capital,” such as Ozark Gold, Red Delicious, Honey Crisp, Winesap and Arkansas Black apples. Featured apple products include apple juice, homemade apple butter, old-fashioned pressed cider and fried apple pies. The local apple season runs from late August through December.
