Full Answer

Not all of France is located on mainland Europe in what is known as metropolitan France. France has many outlying principalities and territories around the globe, many of them small island or tropic nations. France borders the Atlantic Ocean and Bay of Biscay on the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the southeast and the English Channel to the Northwest. The Pyrenees make up the major mountain chain that runs through France. Along with the Alps, they make up the mountainous mid-section. The salty sea air and gently rolling hills between the mountains and the ocean are what make France one of the world's top wine producers. While the outlying territories are mostly tropical, metropolitan France has a mostly temperate climate with cold winters and hot summers. In the Mediterranean south, temperatures are more subtropical with warm winters than they are in the northern part of the country.
