Costa Rica is located in Central America, between Nicaragua and Panama. The country borders the Caribbean Sea to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The capital of Costa Rica is San Jose.
Nicaragua borders Costa Rica to the north, while Panama borders it to the south. The country has a land area of 19,730 square miles and a population of just over 4 million people as of 2015. Most residents live on the temperate central plateau, where San Jose is located. Other geographic features of Costa Rica are active volcanoes, mountains and tropical coastal plains. Approximately 25 percent of Costa Rica's land is protected preserves.
