As of 2015, some fun things to do in Hiawassee, Georgia, include stand-up paddling on a mountain lake, camping at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds and flyboarding at Mountain Wake. Art lovers may want to visit the ArtWorks Artisan Centre to buy a handmade souvenir or indulge in an art class.
Hiawassee is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia near the North Carolina border. The Southern Water Trails Company offers stand-up paddling lessons and tours on seven mountain lakes. Stand-up paddling originated in Hawaii and combines the use of a surfboard with a long-handled paddle. The tours give lessons on how to stay afloat while showing some of the native flora and fauna of the area. Raw beginners may opt for two hours of private or group instruction time.
The Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds offer year-round campsites along the shore of Lake Chatuge. The Georgia Mountain Fair is held each July, while the annual Georgia Fall Festival is held in October. Other events, such as car rallies and concerts, are held throughout the year.
Mountain Wake is located on Lake Chatuge and specializes in water sports, including flyboarding. A flyboard is a specialized board that is propelled by water to make it airborne. Wakeboarding is also available. Boards similar to skateboards are pulled behind speedboats around the lake and over specially designed speed ramps.
