Ocala is nicknamed "the horse capital of the world." There are more than 1,200 horse farms in Ocala and Marion county, of which 900 are thoroughbred farms, as of 2015. Visitors to the area can travel to Florida Horse Park or BG Equestrian Resort to take part in equestrian activities.

The Ocala National Forest is located on 383,000 acres outside of Ocala. It is the southernmost forest in the continental United States and the location of the largest contiguous sand pine scrub forest on Earth. The forest has four natural springs: Silver Glen Springs, Juniper Springs, Salt Springs and Alexander Springs. Ocala National Forest also has four wilderness areas: Juniper Prairie Wilderness, Alexander Springs Wilderness, Little Lake George Wilderness and Billies Bay Wilderness.
