It is possible to locate flood zones using your address by going to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's website, and following links from the Plan, Prepare & Mitigate section. From the search portal, input any address, and locate flood zones in that particular area.
The search by address or location feature enables you to search by address, a place or a set of longitude/latitude coordinates in order to locate the flood map in effect for that location. After you locate the flood map, you can download it, or view and download letters of any changes that were issued for that flood map.
It is important to know whether or not you are located in a flood zone, because standard homeowners insurance does not cover flooding. The National Flood Insurance Program, created in 1968, helps to provide a way for home and property owners to protect themselves when a flood hits. Insurance is offered to homeowners, renters and business owners if their community participates in the National Flood Insurance Program. Communities who participate in the program agree to adopt and enforce the necessary ordinances that meet or exceed the requirements sent in place by FEMA in order the reduce the overall risk of flooding.
