El Centro, California, boasts plenty of outdoor opportunities such as the Coyote Mountains Wilderness, Algdones Dunes Wilderness, Davies Valley and Crucifixion Thorn Natural Area. The Coyote Mountains Wilderness is an 18,000-acre area that covers the rugged terrain of southern California. Visitors can go horseback riding, hiking, hunting, fishing and camping on the land. Visitors can explore the Algondones Dunes Wilderness, which boasts sifting sand dunes and desert animals. The Crucifixion Thorn Natural Area contains a proliferation of plants after the same name, which are leafless shrubs with long thorns.
History enthusiasts can make a quick jaunt over to the Yuha Basin where oyster fossils dating back more than six million years ago are sitting in their original location in a dry lake bed, evidence of an ancient reef that formed millions of years ago. Visitors can then get out of the heat and peruse Alford's Antique Car Museum, offering classics from the early 1900s through the 1960s. For instance, a 1914 Ford Model T Speedster is on display along with a 1928 Franklin convertible Couple, a 1948 Ford Woody Station Wagon, a 1957 Ford Convertible Thunderbird and a 1968 Ford Mustang Convertible.Learn more about Geography
