Egypt is a country located in northeastern Africa on the southeastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. The long-form name of the country is the Arab Republic of Egypt. Egypt celebrates its independence from the United Kingdom as July 23, 1952, though British troops withdrew in 1956.
Egypt is bisected by the Nile River and has vast stretches of desert. It controls the Suez Canal between the Red Sea on its eastern border and the Mediterranean Sea to the north. Sudan borders Egypt to the south, Libya borders the country to the west, and the Gaza Strip borders Egypt's Sinai Peninsula to the east.
