Ecuador is known for its rich biodiversity, tropical habitats and friendly culture. The warm climate makes it a common destination for travelers because it is easily explored at any time of year. Located in South America, Ecuador has a varied geography with rain forests, mountains and beaches.
Partially due to its range of unique habitats, Ecuador offers amazing biodiversity. It was the target of much of Charles Darwin's studies on evolution and variety between species. The Galapagos Islands, where Darwin studied various species of finches, are a part of Ecuador and remain a common travel destination for backpackers. Ecuador is also known for its volcanoes, which are found in the Andes Mountains. Cotopaxi, the world's largest active volcano, is found in Ecuador. Several companies offer guided tours of the volcano. The city of Banos, which is known for its hot springs, is another popular destination in Ecuador.
The culture of Ecuador is welcoming and friendly. Many citizens are descended from Spanish colonists, but some Ecuadorians are descended from German, Italian and even African immigrants. Spanish is the native language, and although there are various indigenous cultures present, the citizens refer to themselves collectively as "Ecuadorians" and are known for their deep national pride.
