The Pacific Ocean was discovered by Vasco Nunez de Balboa in 1513. He was standing on a mountaintop in Panama when he saw the ocean. Balboa walked into the ocean and claimed it in the name of Spain.

Vasco Nunez de Balboa was born in Spain in 1475 and had a passion to be a famous explorer. His first expedition was in 1501 to South America, and he ended up in Hispaniola where he became a pig farmer. In 1511, Balboa was told of a land near the sea where large amounts of gold could be found. Balboa set off in 1513, and after 3 weeks of traveling, he found the Pacific Ocean.
