The zoo is located in the city of Asheboro in Randolph County, which was originally settled by Quakers in the 1780s. The county is surrounded by farmland, historic rivers and the Uwharrie Mountains, which provide a charming backdrop to zoo attractions and events. It is 80 miles north of the South Carolina state line and 75 miles south of the Virginia state line, with about 90 miles of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west and 200 miles of the Atlantic Ocean to the east.
