Members earn points for miles flown with Delta and also for spending money with the company's partners, and these points can be redeemed for airline tickets and other rewards. Under the program, miles flown with Delta count as points. There are also bonus points for various conditions, such as purchasing a seat in first or business class. Points can also be earned by booking with Delta Vacations or through various partners, such as other international airlines, hotels, car rental agencies, credit card companies and restaurants. Points can be redeemed for free plane tickets, free upgrades, tickets to events or a variety of merchandise through the SkyMiles Marketplace. There is also a crossover program that allows points to be used at Starwood hotels and resorts.

Program participants receive special gifts for every million miles flown. As of May 2015, a special "medallion" status is granted at two million and four million miles, and at each million miles, members can choose a gift from Hartmann, Tiffany & Co. or Tumi.
