Cyprus is an island nation located in the Mediterranean Sea in Europe. The Republic of Cyprus has been a member of the European Union since 2004, and the island country has a population of approximately 800,000 inhabitants.
Since 1974, the island of Cyprus has been split into two parts with the northern part of the island being controlled by Turkey. The island's capital, Nicosia, straddles the two parts of the island. In general, the international community considers the whole of the island of Cyprus to be the territory of the Republic of Cyprus with the northern part occupied by Turkey.
