San Jose is the county seat of Santa Clara County and located 50 miles south of downtown San Francisco. With a population of roughly 1 million, the city ranks third-largest in the state of California and 10th-largest overall in the United States.
San Jose was founded in 1777, was incorporated as a city in 1850 and briefly served as the state's capital until it was moved to Sacramento in 1854. The city occupies 176 square miles of the state's "Silicon Valley" region. More than 6,600 technology companies are located in San Jose, one of the world's highest concentrations in the industry.
