Newport News, Va., is an independent city and is not part of any county. Newport News was initially settled in 1621 and was incorporated in 1896. The city had a population estimated at 183,412 people as of 2013.

Newport News is 23 miles long and three miles wide and comprises a land area of 70 square miles and a water area of 50 square miles. The city is the fourth largest in the state of Virginia. Newport News used to be part of Warwick County, but the city was consolidated with the former county in 1958. Newport News borders James City County and York County.
