The city of Denver, Colorado is in Denver County, as the area features a government type that consolidates the city and county together. Denver covers a land area of 155 square miles with a larger metro area measuring more than 8,000 square miles.
Denver was initially founded on Nov. 22, 1858 as Denver City. In its early years, the city was a mining town that grew during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush. The city was later incorporated on Nov. 7, 1861, before becoming a consolidated city and county on Nov. 15, 1902. The city was named after James W. Denver, a territorial governor of Kansas.
