The city of Charlotte is located in Mecklenburg County in the state of North Carolina. Mecklenburg County is located in the southwestern portion of the state.
The county covers an area of 546 square miles. With more than 1 million people living in Mecklenburg, it is the most populated and most densely populated county in North Carolina.
Mecklenburg was formed in 1762 and named in commemoration of the wife of King George III, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The county's primary industries are banking and manufacturing, though it is also home to several prominent universities. Though Charlotte is by far Mecklenburg's largest city, Matthews, Pineville, Huntersville and Davidson are other large towns located in the county.
