Turkey is a country. It is not a region or city located in another country. It is located between Europe and Asia, and borders Syria, Greece, Bulgaria, Georgia, Armenia and Iran.
Turkey was the center of the Ottoman Empire, when Istanbul (then Constantinople) was the center of the Byzantine Empire. Istanbul is now the country's largest city. Turkey's capital is Ankara. Turkish is the official language, but Kurdish is also widely spoken. The main religion in Turkey is Islam.
Turkey is not a member of the European Union. Turkey's first application to the EU was made in 1987, and debates regarding Turkey's acceptance into the EU began in 1995.
