Dubai is a port city in the United Arab Emirates. It has been part of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) since 1971 and is the largest city in that federation.
As one of the seven political territories, called "emirates," within the UAE, Dubai is the most populous and economically vibrant. Its $37-billion economy is based on trade, real estate deals and large-scale construction projects. Petroleum and oil sales account for surprisingly little of the overall economy, only about 6 percent. Dubai's location on the Persian Gulf and its proximity to India make the city an important port of call for global traders.
