Being completely surrounded by water on all sides, Australia is the world's smallest country that is also a continent. Australia is the sixth largest country in the world and makes up 5 percent of the world's total land mass and has a total land area of 7.692 million square kilometers.

Australia's land mass is 50 percent larger than Europe and nearly equal in size to the United States of America. It is also the lowest, driest and flattest continent apart from Antarctica, with 20 percent of its land mass consisting of deserts. The continent has climate zones such as cool temperature forests, tropical rain forests and snow covered mountains. Australia is also surrounded by thousands of islands that range from small to large in size.
