What Countries Does the Ganges River Flow Through?

The River Ganges flows through the countries of India and Bangladesh. It flows through several states, including Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.

The Ganges is a major river in India, providing necessary water for those who live along its banks. In the Hindu religion, the river is worshipped as a goddess. At over 2,500 km, it is the third largest river and discharges into the Bay of Bengal.

Pollution is a major problem for the Ganges river. It was considered the fifth most polluted river in the world in 2007. Home to over 140 species of fish and 90 species of amphibians, efforts to clean up the river have met with little success. The Ganges River dolphin is considered an endangered species because of the pollution.
