Vanuatu is not located on a continent; it is an island located in Oceania. It is located in the Pacific Ocean, between Hawaii and the east coast of the Australian continent.
Vanuatu was ruled by the British and French until it became an independent country in 1980. It is composed of approximately 80 islands, with about 65 of them inhabited. Vanuatu's largest island is Espiritu Santo. Its capital and largest city, as of 2015, is Port-Vila, which is located on the island of Efate. Vanuatu has a population of 266,937, based on 2014 estimates. The majority of the population are Ni-Vanuatu of Melanesian descent.
