Vanuatu was ruled by the British and French until it became an independent country in 1980. It is composed of approximately 80 islands, with about 65 of them inhabited. Vanuatu's largest island is Espiritu Santo. Its capital and largest city, as of 2015, is Port-Vila, which is located on the island of Efate.
